Fred Miller

In 1910 the number of small family farms in the United States reached a peak of over 6 million. It was at this point in American history that young people began leaving the farms for other careers and for life in the city. This was the time of the Industrial Revolution. In addition, World War I ended in 1918 and many young soldiers returning home from Europe brought new ideas. A popular song of the time, “How Ya Gonna Keep ‘em down on the Farm, after they’ve seen Paree,” is a fun look at this trend. Fred Miller, Sarah and William’s oldest son, was one of the young men who chose to leave the farm. Fred established his own successful insurance agency in Painesville, Ohio. In his obituary, Fred is described as a successful businessman and active community member. His funeral was noted as “largely attended and impressive also by reason of the number of floral offerings.”
